For the first time since maybe the movie Days of Thunder, we saw a different team pit another car

On Sunday, NASCAR raced at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. And we saw a very unique situation during a pit stop.

Christopher Bell pitted for four fresh tires and fuel. However, his No. 20 team failed to tighten the lugnuts on the left side.

Bell exited his stall. And for everyone else before him, they took the gamble of going onto the race track.

The penalty for losing a wheel on the racetrack is significant. NASCAR has the option to suspend two crew members.

8.8.10.4.A & C: Tires and Wheels Note: Loss or separation of an improperly installed tire/wheel from the vehicle during the event.

In this case, Bell didn’t even allow that to be an option.

As soon as Bell left his stall, the No. 19 stated stated, “Stop in somebody’s box! Tighten up the left sides. Tighten up the left sides.”

The team added, “That’s fine. I was running to tell them which one to do.”

Bell responded, “Thanks for giving me the heads up.”

Bell pulled into the pit box of the No. 19, his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate. The No. 19 team responded almost instantly. Tightening the loose lugnut, Bell saved his crew members from a suspension.

How does the NASCAR rulebook see this?

There is still a penalty for this situation.

However, the direct rule violation is only pitting outside of your own pit stall. For this violation, Bell only needed to drop to the rear of the field.

That’s far better than losing a wheel on the racetrack. If that happened, the No. 20 would have seen two crew members suspended for the next two race weekends.

Ironically, Chase Briscoe, the driver of the No. 19 team lost a wheel directly after a pit stop. Later in the week, NASCAR will be suspending two crew members as a result.
