Despite not winning a race at Portimao, Nicolo Bulega extended his Championship lead with three third places.
Nicolo Bulega backed up his hat-trick of victories at Phillip Island with a hat-trick of second places at Portimao.
Despite being beaten by Toprak Razgatlioglu in all three races, the Italian was able to find positives in the results. The first positive for Bulega is that he extended his Championship lead from 26 points to 29, but it is now Razgatlioglu who is chasing the young Italian.
Bulega was also happy that he was able to battle with Razgatlioglu around Portimao, a track that the two-time World Superbike Champion has historically been strong around.
"I couldn't do more than what I did today," Bulega said after the Portuguese World Superbike Round.
"I'm happy because this is one of Toprak's [Razgatlioglu] best tracks. He's always very, very strong here in Portimao.
"To battle with him here is a good sign. It means we're making progress. This is important for the rest of the championship."
Bulega was also happy with the improvements he found with his Ducati Panigale V4R. Two weeks before the race weekend, the Italian was struggling at the Portimao WorldSBK Test.
"Two weeks ago, during testing, I didn't have a great feeling here, but we made big improvements to the bike for the race weekend.
"Ducati and my team have worked so hard, and I'm happy with our progress."
