Colapinto admits 'pace was a question mark' before Monza debut

Williams rookie Franco Colapinto admitted that his F1 debut in last Sunday's Italian Grand Prix was a journey into the unknown as he had never completed more the eight laps in a row at the wheel of a Formula 1 car.
However, at the end of the day, the 21-year-old Argentine who replaced Logan Sargeant was very happy with his maiden race, having finished a creditable 12th.
Colapinto's sudden call-up to replace Logan Sargeant came just days before the Monza event, the 21-year-old Argentine transitioning from simulation sessions on Monday to the real world of Formula 1 on Friday.
However, the rapid shift from preparation to competition didn't faze the young charger, as he put together a mature and calculated drive on race day that yielded a creditable P12 finish.
"I am very happy with the result, but happy because the pace was a question mark," Colapinto said, reflecting on his debut race.
"I have never done more than eight laps in a row before this, and suddenly there are 53 – and I had never tried a hard compound [tyre] either. So there were a lot of new things, but it was a very positive weekend overall."
The Williams rookie's weekend wasn't without its challenges. A mistake on his final qualifying lap saw him eliminated in Q1, placing him near the back of the grid.
However, Colapinto bounced back during the race, utilizing a one-stop strategy to maximize his performance and fight his way up the order.
"It was obviously a little bit frustrating with the mistake [in qualifying], but I paid it back to the team with a really strong race," he added.
"I now have a lot of information to take to the factory, on the simulator, and understand better on what I need to work on as your first race is always tough with many unknown things, but we managed it well, and only finishing a couple of seconds outside of the points was decent."
Williams team principal James Vowles was pleased with Colapinto's debut performance, recognizing his potential to contribute points to the team.
"Based on his Sunday performance at Monza, it looks as if Colapinto is on the right trajectory to repay the faith Williams has installed in him across the remainder of the campaign," Vowles stated.
Indeed, Colapinto's productive efforts in the race suggested he is well on his way to repaying that trust.
"It's a whole process that has been very short for me so far, but it's supposed to be long, but my first race went very quickly," Colapinto admitted.
"James and the team had the trust to put me in the seat, it was a very difficult decision they made. But I am extremely happy with the performance and looking forward to getting more comfortable in the car."
Colapinto also took a moment to appreciate the personal significance of the weekend, acknowledging the milestone he achieved by making his F1 debut.
"It's a moment that you have to enjoy," he said. "It's a very proud moment, your first weekend and your first race. It's something that you're never going to forget.
"I just enjoyed it a lot. I tried to enjoy every moment. The drivers were very nice. Some of them gave me some tips. Alex [Albon] has been very helpful in the team."
