Wittich leaves FIA race director role with immediate effect

In an unexpected turn of events, the FIA has announced that Formula 1 race director Niels Wittich has relinquished his role with immediate effect.
The governing body has nominated Rui Marques, who has acted as the race director for the FIA's Formula 3 and Formula 2 series, as Wittich's successor from next week's Las Vegas Grand Prix until the end of the F1 season.
As an FIA official active in the World Endurance Championship and in the German DTM series, Wittich was placed at the helm of F1's race control in 2022, following the removal of Michael Masi in the wake of F1's controversial Abu Dhabi season finale in 2021.
The 52-year-old initially shared the role as F1 race director with his WEC colleague Eduardo Freitas before assuming sole responsibility.
"The FIA can confirm that Niels Wittich has stepped down from his position as F1 Race Director to pursue new opportunities," the statement said.
"Niels has fulfilled his numerous responsibilities as Race Director with professionalism and dedication. We thank him for his commitment, and we wish him the best for the future.
"Rui Marques will assume the role of Race Director from the Las Vegas Grand Prix," the FIA added.
"Rui brings a wealth of experience having previously served as track marshal, scrutineer, national and international steward, Deputy Race Director and Race Director in various championships.
"Most recently, he held the position of Formula 2 and Formula 3 Race Director."
