2025 Range Rover Velar electric SUV spied testing: Video

An electric successor to the Range Rover Velar has been caught undergoing testing at the famed Nurburgring circuit in Germany.

A yet-to-be-confirmed electric version of the next Range Rover Velar luxury SUV has been spied testing ahead of its forthcoming global unveiling and launch in 2025.

A heavily-camouflaged test version of the SUV was caught on film by CarSpyNews with a vehicle registration check – where it's recorded as 'black' and first registered on 1 April 2024 – listing it as a zero-emission vehicle, confirming its electric powertrain.

While the Range Rover Electric – also due in showrooms in 2025 – was teased in December 2023, the vehicle in the CarSpyNews footage is clearly different.

Notable differences – aside from the significantly different side profile – include the horizontal tail-lights, a Velar feature to distinguish it from the vertical taillights of the Range Rover.

There's also a 'shark fin' rooftop antenna which is significantly larger than the version used on the current Velar.

While not officially confirmed by Jaguar-Land Rover (JLR) the next Velar is expected to be one of several electric-only SUVs the car maker has mentioned in statements about its future product line-up.

The test mule was filmed by CarSpyNews in Germany at the Nurburgring race circuit, commonly used by car makers to evaluate vehicles due to its wide variety of undulating corners and changing surfaces.

The footage shows the left-hand-drive test vehicle being reversed from a car carrier in the paddock area with the side and rear of the vehicle – where there are no exhaust pipes clearly visible.

The 2025 Velar electric will be the first vehicle to use JLR's EMA (Electrified Modular Architecture) dedicated electric vehicle platform which will be used to underpin a number of Range Rover and Jaguar electric models.

The platform will offer 800-volt architecture and an estimated 350kW fast-charge rate with batteries to be supplied by JLR parent company, Tata.

JLR has also confirmed Tata will use the EMA platform to launch its Avinya electric SUV range in India in mid-2025.

It may also feature autonomous vehicle capability developed in a partnership between JLR and computing giant Nvidia to collaborate on such technology in 2022.

Production will move to the company's recently refurbished Hailwood, UK, plant where the electric Velar will be made alongside internal combustion models as well as electric versions of the Evoque and Discovery Sport.

The current 2024 Velar is built in the same Solihull, UK (United Kingdom) factory as the Jaguar F-Pace which both use the Jaguar Land Rover iQAI platform and share powertrains.

In Australia, the Velar is offered in a choice of six-cylinder turbocharged petrol engines or a plug-in hybrid using an electric motor and 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol powerplant.

JLR is also working with Chinese joint-venture partner Chery to develop electric vehicles including an electric version of the Land Rover Freelander small SUV for the Chinese market.
