Sales of hybrid cars are breaking records, led by Toyota – but the number of petrol-electric models available from other brands has risen by 50 per cent in two years.
Two in three new ‘plug-less’ hybrid vehicles sold is a Toyota – and almost one in three is a Toyota RAV4 Hybrid – amid a boom in the popularity of petrol-electric vehicles.
Data published by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) reveals a record 129,895 new hybrid vehicles were reported as sold over the first nine months of 2024, up 87 per cent on the same period a year prior.
Hybrid vehicles have outsold electric passenger, SUV and light-commercial vehicles (69,962) by nearly two-to-one – even before the 15,546 plug-in hybrids delivered are included.
Toyota remains the dominant force in the ‘plug-less’ hybrid market, accounting for 68 per cent of petrol-electric sales – or 88,919 vehicles – with hybrids now making up nearly half of its deliveries.

The Toyota RAV4 Hybrid remains Australia’s top-selling hybrid vehicle, with 40,754 deliveries over the first nine months of this year – up 115 per cent – accounting for 94 per cent of RAV4 sales.
In fact, it is so popular that the RAV4 – as well as every other Toyota model with a petrol-electric variant – has only been available to order as a hybrid since mid-June.
Toyota RAV4 Hybrid sales have been aided by greater supply, which has slashed wait times from a high of two years in the wake of the pandemic – to a few months in 2024.
While Toyota hybrid deliveries are stronger than ever, the popularity of other car makers’ petrol-electric vehicles is growing even faster.

Over the first nine months of 2024 alone, 40,976 non-Toyota hybrids have been reported as sold, across 33 models.
The GWM Haval H6 leads the non-Toyota hybrid sales race – with 3586 deliveries since January 1 – ahead of the Nissan X-Trail e-Power, GWM Haval Jolion Hybrid and Hyundai Kona Hybrid.
