Major disruptions and increased traffic congestion are expected in Melbourne as a major freeway closure is announced ahead of Christmas.

Major traffic delays are expected in the coming months – on either side of the Christmas and New Year period – as work continues on Melbourne's M80 Ring Road.

Affecting Melbourne’s west – including suburbs like Sunshine, Melton, and Altona, as well as further afield metropolitan centres like Geelong and Werribee – the planned freeway closures will allow for the installation of overhead signage, ramp signals and road safety barriers.

From November 19 running until December 9, the Geelong-bound ramps to the Princess Freeway and the outer lanes of the West Gate Freeway in the same direction will be closed.

Concurrently, the M80 Ring Road entry ramp away from the city will also be off-limits to traffic.

Work will then carry on progressively between the West Gate Freeway and Boundary Road, which will be shut across three weekends starting November 22-24, followed by December 7-9 and December 14-16.

This shutdown period starts from 10:00pm each Friday and carries on until 5:00am Monday.

Disruptions will continue in the New Year too, with freeway closures, also between the West Gate Freeway and Boundary Road, across four more weekends.

Initially on January 18-19 and continuing February 8-9, both directions will be closed for works.

Following this, on February 15-17 and February 22-24, only the outbound lanes will be affected.

The planned 2025 works will be conducted from 10:00pm Saturday night through to 7:00am Sunday morning.

The M80 works are part of Victoria's Big Build project and aim to extend freeway capacity in and out of Melbourne's west to ease congestion.
