Of the three electric models previously announced between Toyota and Subaru, one is set to go on sale in 2026, while another has been delayed – with details of the third still a secret.

A new electric vehicle in development by Toyota and Subaru is said to be launching in 2026.

According to business news outlet Nikkei Asia,Toyota and Subaru will be targeting Japanese, European, and North American markets with this new electric car – suggesting the model could also go on sale in Australia.

While details of the future vehicle are unknown at this point, the report claims it will share components with the battery-powered Toyota bZ4X and Subaru Solterra twins – the first electric SUV jointly developed by the two Japanese car manufacturers.

Toyota, the world’s biggest car company, owns a 20 per cent stake in Subaru.

Production of the new electric car is scheduled to begin at Subaru’s Yajima factory in January 2026, with up to 20,000 vehicles to roll off the production line each month.

In May 2024, Subaru announced it would launch three new electric SUVs by 2026 – jointly developed with Toyota.

While one of the models was slated to be built in Japan, the other model was expected to be a seven-seater, manufactured by Toyota at one of its US plants.

However, Nikkei Asia also reports Toyota has delayed the production of the US-built electric model – a seven-seater SUV – due to design changes.

The delay comes as sales of electric cars in the US have slowed.

Details of the third future model to be developed between Toyota and Subaru remain unknown at this stage.
