Police said the four-day road operation targeted "three major contributors" to the state's increasing road toll.

A recent New South Wales police road operation has resulted in over 6000 traffic offences being detected.

During ‘Operation RAID’ (Remove All Impaired Drivers) – which ran from 5-8 September 2024 – officers targeted drink and drug driving as well as fatigue, which authorities describe as "three major contributors" to the state's annual road toll.

Of the 120,093 random breath tests carried out in the operation, 211 drivers were charged with drink-driving offences.

Across the four-day road safety blitz, NSW Police conducted 10,885 random drug tests, with 470 drivers returning a positive result.

An additional 1895 speeding offences were detected, plus 261 mobile phone or distraction-related offences – while authorities said over 4200 other driving violations were also identified.

In total, NSW Police detected 6653 traffic-related offences during Operation RAID.

As previously reported by Drive,a 31-year-old driver was caught and arrested during the road operation after he allegedly refused to follow police directions, which led to a pursuit that resulted in the alleged offender crashing his Ford Focus in Albury.

The man has been charged with nine offences and was expected to appear at a local court on 6 September 2024.

According to the NSW state government, road fatalities are up by approximately five per cent in 2024 – 338 deaths recorded from 1 January to 9 September 2024 – in comparison to the same time last year (322).
