A new armoured version of the Skoda Kodiaq SUV has been unveiled, offering a discreet way to stay protected.

They say the best way to protect yourself from a conflict is to avoid it completely – arguably making the Skoda Kodiaq Armoured’s discretion its best defence.

The new Kodiaq Armoured is a joint development between Skoda in the UK and British-based security expert UTAC Special Vehicles – offering buyers a bulletproof vehicle with the looks of a family SUV.

Skoda claims the Kodiaq Armoured has been built to withstand rounds from pistols and assault rifles, and can protect against grenades and high explosives.

As well as being able to withstand in excess of 200 rounds of ammunition and blasts to the sides, roof, and underfloor, the Kodiaq Armoured has been certified to PAS 301 Civilian Armoured Vehicle standards, requiring the vehicle to pass acceleration, speed, handling, braking, and payload tests.

Skoda has upgraded the suspension and brakes to deal with the extra weight that comes from the armour, and has fitted the SUV with run-flat tyres.

The Czech car maker says the Kodiaq Armoured retains the “same drivability and agility of the standard production model”, while standard emergency lights and sirens can be activated if the vehicle is under attack.

Buyers can choose which engine to fit from the standard Kodiaq’s range, though most will likely option the range-topping Kodiaq RS 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine making 180kW and 370Nm – with a 195kW version is expected to be released in 2025.

While specifications haven’t been released, the Kodiaq RS comes with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox and all-wheel drive.

The Kodiaq Armoured also comes standard with an 8.0-inch infotainment screen with satellite navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a communications hub with GPS tracking.

Despite the third row of seats being deleted, the Kodiaq Armoured still offers seating for five occupants and luggage space of more than 2000 litres (with the second row of seats folded).

Pricing for the Skoda Kodiaq Armoured hasn’t been provided, however the vehicle is likely to be popular with families, dignitaries, and cash-in-transit workers not wanting to draw attention to themselves.
