The 2022 Formula 1 world championship will end three weeks earlier than the last two seasons. The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the traditional final stage, will be held on November 20, exactly the day before the start of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, an event with which Liberty Media wanted to avoid overlapping. In 2021 the season ended on 12 December, restarting after ten weeks with the pre-season testing sessions and after 14 weeks with the first race in Sakhir. On paper, it is an option that can help avoid the hated ‘triple headers’, or the sequence of three consecutive races that puts a strain on the teams’ logistics. There are those who want the first 2023 race scheduled for March 5, and those who believe it will also be feasible on February 26. Net of the agreements with the promoters, the only contraindication would be the consequent advancement of the pre-season tests, since the traditional headquarters in Barcelona, although enjoys a mild climate, does not guarantee favorable environmental conditions in mid-February. But even regarding the testing sessions nothing is yet defined, and considering the rather few problems in terms of reliability front compared to the beginning of the current season, it cannot be excluded that the pre-season tests may also be scheduled outside Europe.
