Scuderia Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz is more melancholic than ever on the eve of his final moments driving for the Maranello team: for the Spaniard, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at the 5.281-kilometre Yas Marina Circuit on Yas Island will mark his last weekend behind the wheel of the Maranello car, which has brought him smiles but also caused him significant pain.
In an interview with the Italian daily newspaper *Corriere della Sera* before the Qatar race, the Spaniard shared his feelings and how he plans to experience his final moments in red. But that’s not all: he also addressed the situation with Charles Leclerc, which seemed to have slipped out of control.
Carlos Sainz: “I was fine with Leclerc; I went through tough weeks”
He then recounts (once again) his relationship with Charles Leclerc: “Charles and I know how to talk, and that’s enough for us to clear things up. I apologize to him; he does the same with me, and we move on. We’ve always done it this way. Four years together so close on track without creating any big problems or major incidents. I hope Ferrari will one day appreciate this and thank me.” – the Spanish driver pointed out.
Ferrari meant something very significant to him. “I would have continued racing for them; I expected a renewal. When I found out I was leaving, I went through some very tough weeks. But I don’t even want to say that I did so much to improve the team in recent years. I was just a team member, and we all worked together.”
Was Lewis Hamilton chosen because he's better? “I think I'm very strong; I just need to be more consistent. Just look at what I did in Mexico, a special victory like all the others I've achieved here. The fact that I raced for Ferrari and won with this suit makes me happy and proud. Pairing with Lewis Hamilton? I was fine with Charles; we were the fastest together,” the Spaniard concludes.
