Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz Make Peace
Following the events during and especially after the Las Vegas GP, the spotlight in Qatar is on Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz. The two Ferrari drivers, now at their penultimate Grand Prix as teammates, exchanged critical and avoidable remarks that have caused tension within the team.
In recent days, team principal Frederic Vasseur has taken on the role of peacemaker, as the Constructors' title is still in play. Ferrari is only 24 points behind McLaren and must defend its position in Qatar before attempting a decisive push in Abu Dhabi. Judging by Charles Leclerc's comments in the Qatar GP press conference, the effort seems to have succeeded.
Charles Leclerc's comments ahead of the Qatar Grand Prix
"I don't want to revisit what happened in Las Vegas. These are the final races of the season, and we have to do absolutely everything possible to win the Constructors' title. That's the only thing that matters: we discussed Las Vegas, and everything is fine now, which is the most important thing. I have no doubts about that because I've always had a great relationship with Carlos," said the Monegasque. "There have been some races where things didn't go exactly as we wanted, but the most important thing is that we discuss it and move on. It's very clear to both of us that we only want to win the Constructors' title, and only by working as a team can we achieve that goal. I'm sure there won't be any problems." – the Monegasque driver pointed out.
Charles Leclerc acknowledged that there have been discussions with Carlos Sainz, not just after Las Vegas. However, their relationship has always weathered these disagreements: "Sometimes I've gone a bit too far, and other times he has. These situations have required discussions between us: we look each other in the eye and understand each other very quickly. Sometimes this kind of confrontation is necessary to reset the situation a bit. In the final races of the season, there won't be any issues because, in the end, it benefits us both to try and win the Constructors' Championship. We know opportunities like this don't come around often: we both have to give it our all to try to win, and we need each other to succeed." – the Moneagsque driver concluded ahead of the Qatar Grand Prix.
