The return of Mario Andretti
The week leading up to the 2024 Formula 1 Qatar Grand Prix began with news of a preliminary agreement between the FIA, F1, and General Motors for the entry of an eleventh team on the 2026 grid, competing under the GM/Cadillac name. Among the highlights of the announcement was the involvement of 1978 world champion Mario Andretti, who has been appointed as an ambassador and senior advisor for the project.
The power unit question
The 84-year-old has already hinted at the most likely path to securing a power unit for the 2026 Formula 1 season. The new team initially planned to form a partnership with Renault, but the withdrawal of the French manufacturer has made this option no longer viable.
The most probable scenario, as confirmed by Andretti, now points to Ferrari. The Maranello-based manufacturer will only supply engines to Haas, as Sauber transitions under Audi’s control (debuting as both a team and constructor) in 2026. “We're in talks,” Mario Andretti told NBC News. “It's not finalized yet, but that's the goal. That's the preference.”
A love for Ferrari
This goal aligns with Mario Andretti's past ties to Ferrari, with whom he competed in the 1971 and 1972 championships and briefly returned in 1982. “My history with Ferrari and my relationship with Mr. Ferrari hold great weight,” Mario Andretti concluded. “There are many factors here that make a lot of sense. It would be the best possible solution.”
