Mattia Binotto has just returned to F1 and is considering which driver to assign to Audi's second seat: here's how he responded to the idea of Sebastian Vettel.

Sebastian Vettel said goodbye to the world of F1 at the end of 2022 but never ruled out a return: as a result, the latest rumors continue to link him to Audi and newcomer Mattia Binotto. The former Ferrari team principal has recently returned to the F1 paddock, wearing the Stake colors in preparation for 2026 and the full transition to the German Audi team.

Currently, Stake has secured the services of Nico Hulkenberg, who will say farewell to Haas at the end of the 2024 Formula 1 season. The German driver will also be a part of the future project, but as of now, a second driver to pair with Hulkenberg is still needed.

This is where Sebastian Vettel's name comes up. Since his retirement, rumors about his possible return to the top motorsport category have never died down. Vettel's presence has always been in high demand in the paddock, even after his departure, and this could lead him to consider a return.

At Audi, Sebastian Vettel would reunite with familiar figures he has worked with in the past. Jonathan Wheatley, with whom Vettel won four world titles at Red Bull, and Mattia Binotto, with whom he worked at Ferrari, are both part of the team.

Mattia Binotto was directly asked if Sebastian Vettel is being considered for a seat at Audi. “I love Sebastian. I know him well from the past, and I enjoyed working with him. I know how strong he is as a person and as a driver,” the Italian engineer said.

“But keep in mind that I've only been here a few weeks. First, I need to understand, look around, listen, and at some point, we will have to decide. And it has to be the right decision for Audi. Not just for 2025, but also for the future.” For now, Valtteri Bottas seems to be the most suitable option, but nothing is off the table.
