EU Commission stops merger between Liberty Media and MotoGP: here's what we know

The acquisition of MotoGP has come under scrutiny: the European Commission (EC) is investigating Liberty Media‘s purchase of the motorcycle racing series. The EC fears that the U.S. giant, by acquiring a majority stake in MotoGP (86%), would gain excessive power, as it already owns Formula 1. Concerns are primarily focused on the broadcasting and streaming sectors. The $3.8 billion deal is now under the European Union’s spotlight, with the investigation led by Teresa Ribiero, head of the EU's Antitrust division.
“With the acquisition of Dorna Sports [owner of MotoGP], Liberty Media would hold the commercial rights to two of the most popular motorsports in Europe: Formula 1 and MotoGP,” she stated. “We need to closely assess whether this acquisition could negatively impact European broadcasters, for instance, by increasing licensing fees and ultimately affecting European consumers and motorsport fans through higher prices. At the same time, we will openly consider any proven claims from the parties regarding the potential benefits this acquisition might bring for fans, the industry, and consumers,” she concluded.
This is a case of “frozen nuptials,” and we may only learn more about the outcome in the coming weeks.
