New solution
Whether for drivers, track marshals, or spectators, the FIA is constantly seeking solutions to further enhance safety during races. This was demonstrated just days before pre-season testing in Bahrain with the introduction of a new anti-debris barrier developed by Swiss company Geobrugg and approved by the International Federation.

Increased height
This 6-meter-high fence will be placed in the most hazardous areas of circuits, such as high-speed corners, steep elevation changes, or grandstands that may be more exposed to debris. One immediately recalls the horrific crash of Zhou Guanyu at Silverstone in 2022, when the Chinese driver’s Alfa Romeo flipped shortly after the start, went over the barriers, and struck the protective fences, which stopped the car and prevented a potential tragedy.

Regulations
According to FIA rules, all circuits must be equipped with these fences, with Grade 1 tracks required to replace damaged fencing with an approved solution. Meanwhile, Grade 2 circuits must comply by 2026. To receive final approval, the fence must withstand the impact of a 780 kg sphere launched from a sled at 60 km/h and a collision with a large car at 120 km/h. Despite the increased height, spectators can still enjoy a good view from the grandstands while benefiting from greater safety.

“Our goal of keeping spectators, workers, and officials safe at a circuit has taken another step in the right direction,” said Jochen Braunwarth, Geobrugg's Director of Motorsport Solutions. “Increasing the height of the anti-debris barrier provides a higher level of safety against flying debris that could reach grandstands or other spectator areas. Being close to the action while ensuring safety is a delicate balance, and in most cases, there is a higher risk exposure compared to other areas. This risk has now been mitigated thanks to a taller solution that offers protection against flying debris from cars involved in crashes.”
