F1 has issued a statement following strong objections from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) over the possibility of hosting a GP in Rwanda. This controversy arises in the context of ongoing tensions between the two countries, exacerbated by Rwanda's involvement with the M23 rebel group, which has led to significant population displacement within Congo.
During the FIA awards gala held in Kigali last year, Rwandan President Paul Kagame announced the country's ambition to host a Formula 1 race. While the return of F1 to the African continent is highly anticipated—especially by seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton—the proposal immediately raised serious concerns in Congo.
F1's stance on the Rwanda-Congo issue
Foreign Minister Therese Kayikwamba Wagner expressed deep concerns in a letter addressed to F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali, questioning whether Rwanda is a suitable choice to represent Africa in the world of motorsport.
Wagner highlighted the humanitarian crisis, noting that over 700,000 Congolese citizens have been displaced due to the conflict. She emphasized the potential damage to F1's brand if it were to align itself with a country described as "stained with blood" due to its current military and political actions.
In response to the Republic of Congo's concerns, F1 issued a statement. "We are closely monitoring developments" in the region and assured that any decision regarding the Grand Prix will align with Formula 1's core values. Furthermore, they reaffirmed that the priority remains the integrity and image of F1.
