The FIA and FOM have revealed several updates for F1, set to take effect from 2025 to improve the series.
The 2024 Formula 1 season concludes with great enthusiasm, marking a historic chapter as the longest ever held. The President of the FIA, together with Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula One Management (FOM), celebrated the year’s success and outlined the sport’s future prospects. Numerous topics were addressed, from 2026 to the first updates officially announced by the FIA for F1 starting in 2025.

Regulatory changes for 2025 F1 campaign
Among the updates approved by the World Motor Sport Council for 2025 is the “Heat Hazard” regulation, introducing a mandatory cooling kit for drivers in extreme weather conditions. This device, jointly developed by the FIA and the teams, aims to ensure greater safety and comfort. It was tested by Charles Leclerc during the post-season testing in Abu Dhabi and will be integrated into the car.

Other updates concern the Financial Regulations. New definitions will be included to exclude “Sustainability Initiatives” from the cost cap, encouraging teams to invest in environmental projects without compromising their budgets. This step reaffirms Formula 1’s commitment to greater sustainability.

Updates for F1 in 2026
The 2026 Sporting Regulations will also receive significant updates, including the adoption of gender-neutral language. On the technical front, teams will be allowed to work on the aerodynamics of 2026 cars starting from January 1, 2025, enabling more thorough preparation. A notable change is the introduction of the 2026 Operational Regulations, a new section governing team activities outside race weekends. Elements such as limitations on aerodynamic testing, power unit testing, and mandatory shutdown periods, previously included in the Sporting Regulations, will now be managed under this new framework.

Also looking ahead to 2026, the FIA is nearing the publication of the latest revision of the guidelines for the next generation of car regulations. These cars aim to bring F1 back to featuring numerous overtakes and on-track action.
