In recent months, Cadillac's entry into Formula 1 from 2026 was made official after lengthy negotiations and discussions to reassure teams that feared economic harm from the arrival of a new squad. But saying no to a giant like General Motors was quite complicated, as it is a brand set to add value to the category.

And now, attention turns to the East.

In an interview with Le Figaro, FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem expressed his willingness to facilitate the entry of new manufacturers into F1: “For two years, I have dreamed of seeing major countries represented in Formula 1. The United States will be there with General Motors, and the next step will be welcoming a Chinese manufacturer. The driver is already there.” He was referring to Guanyu Zhou, recently named Ferrari's reserve driver.

Ben Sulayem then added: “Liberty Media is doing a good job, but I couldn't be happier if F1 returned to France or even Germany. Expanding into new countries is great, but we must not forget our historical roots.”

On the 24-race calendar, he concluded: “I think it's too many; I've said it, and many media outlets have criticized me. Twenty would be enough. From the beginning, I've believed that F1 needs fewer GPs but more teams. That's why we brought in General Motors with Cadillac. Many were against it, but it was a good decision for the sport.”
