Former Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto explains why he wouldn't have signed Lewis Hamilton

Behind his departure from Ferrari is probably also a relationship with Charles Leclerc that was no longer optimal. The scenes we all remember from the end of the 2022 British Grand Prix at the Silverstone circuit, with that finger pointed at the Monegasque driver, almost as if scolding him after yet another strategic mistake by the pit wall, sparked significant discussion within the Ferrari world. Despite this, Mattia Binotto doesn’t believe that Ferrari’s decision to bet on a driver like Lewis Hamilton was the right one.

The British driver will soon pass through the gates of Maranello to take on his last great challenge in Formula 1. Winning that much-coveted eighth title with the most iconic team on the grid would further cement his status as a legend of the sport.

It will not be an easy goal to achieve. Charles Leclerc, should the 2025 car allow it, will try in every way to prove himself as Ferrari’s lead driver, aiming for what would be the first world championship title of his career.

“I wouldn’t have signed him”
Mattia Binotto, interviewed by the Italian daily newspaper Il Corriere della Sera, spoke about the ‘deal of the century’ pulled off by Frederic Vasseur. “I wouldn’t have signed Hamilton,” said the former Ferrari Team Principal. “However, he did very well to accept; I agree with his decision to join Ferrari.”

On why he wouldn’t have signed the British driver, Mattia Binotto was clear. “Ferrari had already bet on other drivers like Leclerc. If Charles is the talent, then it’s right for him to be the one guided towards winning the title,” explained the new Audi boss.
