The FIA has recently come under fire for allegedly overreacting after Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc used profanity during the latest official press conferences. The differing penalties handed to the Red Bull and Scuderia Ferrari drivers by motorsport's governing body have sparked debate, with many questioning the rationale behind the contrasting punishments.

Ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix, the Dutchman received a community service penalty from the FIA for using the f-word in the drivers’ press conference. Observers felt this was the FIA’s way of setting an example with the three-time Formula 1 champion, coinciding with FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem's call for drivers to be mindful of their language. The Red Bull man responded by opting out of further FIA press conferences at the Marina Bay street circuit that weekend, instead holding his own media sessions.

Charles Leclerc, in contrast, was fined €10,000—€5,000 of which was suspended for a year—after his own use of profanity following the Mexico City Grand Prix at the 4.304-kilometre Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. According to the FIA, the Ferrari driver's lighter penalty was justified due to the nature of the question he was answering, which they viewed as leading, as well as his immediate apology, unlike Max Verstappen.

When Formula 1 fans were surveyed by the racingnews365 website on the FIA's approach, exactly 50% believed that neither driver should have been penalized at all. Just over 31% felt that the FIA had set a precedent and should have treated both drivers equally. The remaining 19% agreed that the circumstances warranted different penalties for each driver, considering the distinct contexts of each situation.
