The dream of Formula 1 may prove unattainable, as future Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton has a candid warning for the youth. The costs of funding a career in motorsport are becoming increasingly high, faced with many boys and girls dreaming of a future behind the wheel of a racing car. According to the seven-time British World Champion, having a “Plan B” is crucial, as is continuing to study.

Formula 1 is the dream of thousands of people worldwide. Whether the goal is to race in it, work in it, or tell its stories, working in the paddock represents a highly sought-after and, consequently, privileged achievement. The positions are few, given the boundless demand, and often, especially if the aim is to drive a single-seater, one must cover substantial financial expenses.

On the other hand, this is not a new phenomenon; in fact, from the dawn of Grand Prix racing, single-seater competitions have favored the wealthier individuals, although there have been notable exceptions. Today, the path to Formula 1, moving through karts and then to lower formulas, requires significant investments that, if not supported by a major team’s academy, must be gathered through sponsors and investors.

“[Motorsport] is very expensive,” Lewis Hamilton explains, as reported by GPBlog. “I don’t know how much the costs are today, but I’ve heard it’s two to four times higher than when I started. If I hadn’t entered McLaren, I wouldn’t be here today. It's definitely concerning that costs keep rising.” – the future Ferrari driver pointed out.

“[To young people I say] that they need to continue studying and training. Probably more than 99% of drivers never make it to Formula 1… Maybe even less. It would be nice if they could have something to rely on, but I believe people have become so competitive today that kids aren’t going to school; they train, train, and train. I don’t think that’s good for their future.” – the seven-time Formula 1 world champion concluded.
