Mattia Binotto sees the glass as half full
“They were twenty-eight years during which I received a lot.” This is how Mattia Binotto remembers his long journey at Ferrari, during which he climbed the ranks over the years, eventually holding the highest positions in a Formula 1 team, including technical director and team principal from 2019 to 2022, replacing Maurizio Arrivabene.

A four-year period marked by some highs, such as Charles Leclerc’s historic first victory at Monza in 2019 and the excellent first part of the 2022 season with the F1-75, but also, and above all, several lows.

One only has to think of the many mistakes made on the pit wall over the seasons, the missed victory in Monaco in 2021 after Charles Leclerc’s extraordinary pole on Saturday, or the disastrous handling in the British Grand Prix at the Silverstone circuit the following year, and the glaring strategy error in the Hungarian Grand Prix, again with the Monegasque driver.

Many other controversial episodes could be cited from those four years, but the Italian-Swiss, now leading the Audi project, does not believe he left a negative memory at Maranello.

“A review? There were very good moments, but also mistakes, from which you always learn. Overall, a very positive period,” he said in an interview with *Corriere della Sera*, reflecting on his results as team principal.

Broadening the discussion to his twenty-eight years at Maranello, Mattia Binotto stated: “I feel fortunate to have been part of an extraordinary story, a period of fantastic victories to which I contributed.” – he pointed out. – “If I think about the experience as team principal, it was a beautiful challenge: there was a team coming off difficult years that needed to be revitalized. We had to rebuild the foundations for a solid organization, also focusing on young talent.” – the Italian manager pointed out.

Despite his new adventure at Audi and an unhappy divorce from Ferrari, Mattia Binotto’s heart remains red: “Since I was a child, I have supported Ferrari. I still have many photos and objects at home. The past cannot be erased. Then there are professional choices, things that must remain separate. Today, I am still happy when I see the red car win. I am especially pleased for that team I know well and to which I believe I contributed.” – the new Audi boss concluded.
