Penalty points: where things stand ahead of Singapore GP after Kevin Magnussen's race ban

Who is next after Magnussen?
In recent weeks, due to the race ban given to Kevin Magnussen, Formula 1 fans have 'rediscovered' the penalty points system, the points-based license that tracks drivers' infractions and – as in this case – can lead to a forced suspension of a driver for a Grand Prix if they accumulate 12 penalty points within a 12-month period.

Watch out, Fernando
After the 'ban' imposed on Kevin Magnussen, who missed the Azerbaijan GP, thus becoming the first driver ever disqualified under this system, there are no immediate disqualification risks for anyone, except for Fernando Alonso.

The Aston Martin driver has already accumulated eight penalty points this year and cannot discard any until the end of the season, unlike Sergio Perez, who has seven points but will be able to drop four of them after the Singapore weekend.

Ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso still has a certain safety margin before facing a potential race ban and hasn't received any penalties in the last six races. However, with a couple of incidents between now and the season finale in Abu Dhabi, the situation could become worrying again. With Kevin Magnussen's penalty points reset, all other key players in the Circus are now reasonably sure they can finish the season without concerns – at least from a disciplinary perspective.
