After 17 years, Ferrari will win an F1 championship. The Vasseur-led team—formed by the Leclerc-Hamilton duo—is the right one. Gerhard Berger, former Formula One driver and a former Scuderia Ferrari member, is convinced of this.
There is no doubt that expectations for this new Ferrari era are at an all-time high. The 2024 season was a positive one for the Scuderia, which reached the final round in Abu Dhabi still in the fight for the constructors' title. Although last season's finale favored McLaren's rivals, it cannot be said that Maranello did not take the defeat in stride. That is because Fred Vasseur's team has been on an upward trajectory since the Frenchman arrived in Emilia, and reaching the final race with a shot at the title—albeit as underdogs—can already be considered an achievement for Ferrari, which had endured too many dark years.
If the exponential growth of 2024 had already filled the team with confidence, the arrival of Lewis Hamilton has brought even more excitement to Maranello. The British superstar's move to Via Abetone Inferiore, a true icon of the sport, represents another step forward in Fred Vasseur's Ferrari project. From 2025, the team boss from France will have an even more motivated squad and a driver pairing—Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton—that is the envy of the entire grid.
Ferrari Will Win the 2025 F1 Championship: Berger's Conviction
The conditions for success are in place, and many experts believe Ferrari is destined to rise again soon. Among those who hold this view is Gerhard Berger, who knows the Maranello environment very well. The Austrian former driver spent six years at Ferrari, split into two stints.
The 65-year-old from Woergl spoke to Germany's Auto Motor und Sport, sharing his thoughts on the upcoming season. "I can't say whether Hamilton or Leclerc will win the drivers' title, but they will win a championship. I would put my money on Ferrari for this season," Berger stated with confidence.
"This is my personal impression," explained the Austrian. "Last year, Ferrari was fast almost all the time," he elaborated, "with very few missteps."
"Vasseur Is Bringing Ferrari Back to the Top"
The main credit for a resurgent 2024 undoubtedly goes to team principal Fred Vasseur. According to Berger, he is the key architect of Ferrari's revival: "I trust Vasseur. It took some time, but he is bringing stability to the team and has almost reached the goal. They are in good shape both in terms of engine and chassis. And they have two great drivers."
Berger highly appreciates the French team boss's approach: "He is a calm and thoughtful person, always on top of things and results-oriented. Ferrari made a great decision in hiring him as team principal, and it was clear to everyone that it would take one or two years for the work to bear fruit. Now, I think that work is starting to pay off. And I also think it's fantastic that he managed to bring in Hamilton. Vasseur is bringing Ferrari back to the top," concluded Gerhard Berger.
