Mercedes ditches Silverstone F1 launch for Bahrain shakedown

Mercedes has opted to ditch its traditional F1 season launch event at Silverstone for a filming day with its 2025 W16 challenger at the Bahrain International Circuit on February 25.
The shakedown will take place just one day before pre-season testing begins at Sakhir, according to Motorsport.com.
The decision to shift the launch closer to testing ensures the W16 remains under development for as long as possible, a strategic move as the team looks to reclaim its place at the pinnacle of the Constructors' Championship.
As F1 teams embark on their fourth and final year of competing under the sport's ground-effect regulations, Mercedes is confident the later debut will ensure a trouble-free start to its 2025 campaign.
Under Formula 1's current regulations for "Promotional Events," teams are allowed 200 kilometers of running during filming days.
This translates to roughly 36 laps of the Bahrain circuit, which will be shared between George Russell and Kimi Antonelli.
75th Anniversary Season Presentation in London
While fans will have to wait to see the W16 in action, its striking livery will be unveiled earlier, at Formula 1's official 2025 season launch on February 18.
Taking place at London's O2 Arena, the event will celebrate the championship's 75th anniversary with all ten teams presenting their liveries.
However, the actual 2025 cars won't be revealed, with teams holding back technical details until closer to testing or the season opener.
Teams Play the Waiting Game
Mercedes is not the only team delaying the full reveal of its 2025 car. Ferrari has scheduled an online livery unveiling for February 19, the day after F1's London event.
Meanwhile, Williams will unveil its FW47 charger on Valentine's Day, although the car will be draped in a "bespoke one-off livery".
Other teams are expected to pull the covers off their car in the Bahrain pitlane on the first day of pre-season testing on February 26.
This staggered approach reflects the high stakes and competitive secrecy that dominate the lead-up to every F1 season.

For Mercedes, 2025 represents another crucial step in its bid to return to dominance after the setbacks that marked the team's recent campaigns.
