Mercedes has officially revealed its 2025 Formula 1 challenger, the W16, marking the beginning of "a new era" for the Silver Arrows squad.

Following the livery reveal at last week's F1 75 launch event in London, the team has now presented the actual race car that George Russell and debutant Andrea Kimi Antonelli will race in the upcoming season.

The W16 represents a fundamental shift in Mercedes' approach to ground-effect aerodynamics, aiming to solve the setup inconsistencies that plagued its predecessors.

'We Open an Exciting New Era'

After a mixed 2024 season, which included two wins each for Russell and Lewis Hamilton but also periods of struggle and unpredictable performance swings, Mercedes is aiming for a more consistent showing in 2025.

Team Principal Toto Wolff expressed his enthusiasm for the new car and the season ahead.

"We open an exciting new era in the story of our team and Mercedes-AMG motorsport in 2025. We're building on the incredible legacy of our heritage, and we can't wait to go racing," Wolff said.

'We Have Made Gains in the Off-Season'

Wolff acknowledged the intense competition of the previous season and the team's focus on improvement.

"Everyone at the team, in Brackley and Brixworth, has been hard at work over the winter. Last season was incredibly competitive on the track and, whilst we took several wins, we are all focused on challenging for victories more consistently.

We have made gains in the off-season, but we will only know where we stand come the first race in Australia," he continued.

This suggests a renewed determination within the team to close the gap to their rivals.

An Exciting Line-Up

With Lewis Hamilton's departure to Ferrari, George Russell steps into the role of team leader, while 18-year-old Antonelli joins the team after a rapid rise through the Mercedes junior program.

Wolff spoke about the team's driver pairing.

"We have an exciting line-up to help us achieve our objectives. Both drivers have progressed through our junior programme and that is a vindication of our commitment to both supporting and developing talent."

Wolff praised Russell's abilities and his leadership potential.

"George has proven that he is one of the very best drivers on the grid, capable of competing for the Drivers' Championship if we can give him a car capable of doing so.

"As the senior driver, he will help lead the team forward and support Kimi in his development."

The Austrian also expressed his confidence in Antonelli's potential, while acknowledging the challenges of a rookie season.

"Kimi has all the necessary talent to achieve great things at the pinnacle of the sport, but this is a rookie season and there will inevitably be ups and downs.

"We're looking forward to that journey together though and helping him develop over the course of the year," he said.

Bahrain Testing

The W16 will hit the track for a filming day at the Bahrain International Circuit on Tuesday, followed by pre-season testing at the same venue from February 26-28.

These sessions will provide the first real indication of whether Mercedes' efforts over the winter have paid off and if the W16 is capable of delivering the consistent victories the team is aiming for.
