BYD considering simplifying warranty in Australia

BYD offers a six-year warranty in Australia with exceptions reducing the coverage for selected components – but it is now considering a streamlined approach.
Electric and hybrid car specialist BYD has confirmed it’s considering updating its warranty coverage in Australia.
Current BYD vehicles are covered by a six-year/150,000-kilometre warranty – however the terms and conditions reveal exceptions reducing the coverage for some parts.
This includes the infotainment touchscreen, shock absorbers, charging port assembly and USB charge ports, which are only covered for three years or 60,000 kilometres, whichever comes first.
The lights, tyre pressure monitoring module, suspension and ball joints are covered for four years or 100,000 kilometres – while consumables receive a six-month/10,000-kilometre warranty.
BYD Asia-Pacific general manager Liu Xueliang said changes to the brand’s warranty in Australia are being considered, which could see the number of exceptions reduced.
“It’s very valuable feedback, and actually that is already under consideration right now,” Xueliang said via a translator.
EVDirect – the distributor of BYD vehicles in Australia – announced a seven-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty for its first vehicle, the BYD Atto 3, when local order books opened three years ago.
When deliveries of the Atto 3 commenced, it was confirmed BYD vehicles would instead receive a six-year/150,000-kilometre warranty, and an eight-year/160,000-kilometre high-voltage battery warranty.
EVDirect executive Luke Todd said the change was due to a standardised BYD warranty across the Asia-Pacific region, which was finalised after it had made the initial seven-year/unlimited-kilometre announcement.
“When we launched in February [2022], BYD hadn’t set their global warranty policy, or especially for this region, so we had to go it alone. We went with what we had agreed at the time,” Todd said in August 2022.

BYD’s six-year warranty is longer than the four- and five-year warranties of competitors such as Tesla, Hyundai, Xpeng and Zeekr – but these warranties have fewer restrictions than BYD.
MG vehicles sold in Australia since 1 August 2024 are covered by a 10-year/250,000-kilometre warranty for non-commercial use, including high-voltage components of its electric, plug-in hybrid and hybrid cars.
Kia and GWM warrant their vehicles for seven years and unlimited kilometres – with GWM having an additional eight-year/unlimited-kilometre coverage for high-voltage components.
