GWM record sales push into Australia's top 10

Led by its Haval SUVs, GWM kept the ball rolling in 2024 to break into the top ten for the first time.
GWM sold a record number of new vehicles in Australia in 2024 to finish in the top ten for the first time, knocking out brands including Tesla, VW and Subaru.
The Chinese car maker posted 42,783 sales in 2024, up from 36,397 in 2023, which itself was more than triple GWM's (Great Wall Motors) previous best result of 11,006 in 2012.
GWM is second only to MG as Australia's best-selling Chinese new vehicle brand, with MG finishing seventh ahead of Isuzu Ute and Nissan before GWM – which outsold both BYD and Chery in 2024.
Posting 17.5 per cent year-on-year growth – the most of any brand in the top ten including a record-setting Toyota – it caps an incredible continuous five-year rise for the GWM brand, shown by sales of 25,042 in 2022 and 18,384 in 2021.
In 2020 it sold only 1941 new vehicles – 5135 if you include GWM's Haval SUV brand whose sales were recorded separately in Australia until 2021 – which still equates an 833 per cent increase over five years.
In the past 12 months, the most popular vehicle was the GWM Haval Jolion SUV – which led the small SUV below $45,000 segment – with the Haval H6 and H6 GT SUVs the brand's next-best sellers.
Sales of Haval SUVs contributed 26,660 of GWM Australia's 42,783 sales in 2024, with Haval alone outselling BYD, Chery, Suzuki and BMW for the year.
This included a significant rise of 43 per cent for the hybrid Jolion SUV, with GWM saying in a statement more than one-in-four new vehicles sold across its eight models in 2024 was a hybrid (11,980).
The GWM Ute was the best seller after Haval models (8101 sales), with the GWM Tank off-road SUVs – sold in 300 and 500 guise – posting a combined 5371.
Sales of the electric Ora hatchback more than doubled from 526 in 2023 to 1225 in 2024, easily outselling the Nissan Leaf – despite significant price cuts for the Nissan, with a new generation Leaf due to be unveiled in 2025.
In the second quarter of 2025 GWM will launch an updated H6 SUV – potentially including a plug-in hybrid version of the Toyota RAV4 rival – as well as the Haval H6 GT PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle).
An updated version of the Cannon Alpha ute will also arrive in 2025, as well as a diesel option for the petrol-powered Tank 300 SUV.
