MG’s next-generation Toyota RAV4 rival is due to be unveiled next week with the option of long-range plug-in hybrid power.

The next-generation 2025 MG HS mid-size family SUV has been teased ahead of an Australian launch due by the end of this year.

Scheduled to be unveiled next Thursday, 11 July 2024 at 7:00pm AEST, the first new HS in five years will be available with 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engines, as well as the option of plug-in hybrid technology.

As previously reported by Drive, it is based on a vehicle sold by MG’s parent company SAIC in its domestic market, the Roewe RX5, with a restyled front fascia, conventional door handles rather than pop-out units, and other styling tweaks.

A teaser video published by MG confirms the connection seen in spy photos captured in Australia, as well as patent images.

MG said in a media release overnight a plug-in hybrid version would be available to order from launch in the UK “promising to offer an unmatched all-electric range for the class.”

In its home market, the Roewe RX5 plug-in hybrid claims up to 135km of electric-only driving range from a recently enlarged 21.4kWh battery.

Three petrol-only model grades are expected to be available in Australia. The base model is set to be sold only with the 1.5-litre engine and a dual-clutch transmission, while the other two are in line to offer the option of the 2.0-litre engine and a nine-speed automatic transmission.

“I think calling it a rebadge is probably doing a bit of injustice to it,” MG Motor Australia general manager of marketing David Hearty recently told Drive.

“There’s a lot of work that goes into the vehicles we bring here to make sure they are suitable for the market.

“Design language is really important. … When you see that vehicle as a finished product, it is in no way a mismatch. It certainly belongs in the stable.”

More details are due closer to the global reveal of the 2025 MG HS next week, at the Goodwood Festival of Speed car show in the UK.
