What does Toyota have cooking? A new trademark filing suggests there may be a hotter GR Supra on the way.

The 2025 Toyota GR Supra Track Edition appears to be edging closer to reality, following the discovery of a trademark filing by Drive.

Toyota has submitted the trademark GR Supra Track Edition to IP Australia – the Federal Government’s intellectual property authority – suggesting a new, more aggressive variant of the turbocharged sports car could be on the way.

A high-performance version of the coupe has been spotted testing with a large ‘swan neck’ rear wing earlier this year – widely reported to be named the GRMN Supra – though it’s possible it could end up being known as the GR Supra Track Edition.

Previous reports suggest the GRMN Supra could see the vehicle’s power increased to more than 300kW, while others have suggested the model could borrow the engine and gearbox from a BMW M2 – with the Supra built on the same platform as the BMW Z4.

However, the Supra Track Edition does already exist in some European markets, believed to be largely the same specification as the GR Supra GTS sold in Australia.

Car companies are known to trademark names of models and variants sold internationally, though it’s unknown whether this is what Toyota is doing in this case, or if Australian buyers have a more track-focussed Supra to look forward to.

In October 2024 – when the GR Supra was announced it was joining the Supercars motor racing series – a senior Toyota Australia executive all but confirmed the sports car would live on for a new generation.

“People always say 'When's the new model?' but the day we launch a new model we start to think about the next one – you'll have to wait and see when the new one's coming,” Toyota Australia sales and marketing boss Sean Hanley said at the time.

“But I'm telling you now – Supra keeps going.”

A week prior to the Supercars announcement, Japanese publication Best Car – known for having reliable sources within Toyota – claimed the next Supra would be switching from its current 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder engine to a four-cylinder hybrid engine.

Earlier in 2024, Toyota showed off a new generation of turbocharged four-cylinder performance engines in 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre displacements, supposedly earmarked for the company’s future line-up.
