The comparison between Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz is a daily topic at Scuderia Ferrari. According to the director of the Ferrari Driver Academy and British engineer Jock Clear, there is one race in particular that really hurt the Monegasque driver.
At Ferrari, from 2021 to today, we have witnessed a fierce rivalry between Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz. Among the various races where the Spaniard got the better of his teammate, Jock Clear believes there was one race in particular that shook Charles.
Here's the most disappointing race for Charles Leclerc:
"And I think he responded well to a very strong teammate," said Jock Clear on the Beyond the Grid podcast. The Maranello technician is convinced that to get ahead of his teammate in 2024, Charles needed a wake-up call. The blow that the Monegasque driver needed seems to have come in a particular GP: "We've often talked about Carlos's qualities, and even if Carlos might not have the same pure speed that Charles can show in qualifying, let's look at Singapore last year: that was a decisive moment for Charles." – the Ferrari engineer explained.
"That was a race where Charles felt favored to win. He always goes to Singapore with a lot of confidence, so seeing Carlos manage to beat him right under his nose hurt him. I believe that moments like that pushed him to focus more on his Sunday performance," he continued, referring to Carlos Sainz's victory last year in the Singapore Grand Prix.
For Jock Clear, the crucial point to reach was about effectiveness throughout the entire weekend and not just in qualifying: "Not that he hadn't thought about it before, but these moments make you slightly shift your perspective. It's no longer just about getting the best car for qualifying and doing a perfect lap, but about making sure you complete the job in the race."
"We're seeing a better version of Charles as a driver, and of us as a race team," he concluded.
