Formula 1 recently announced its first investment in the “sustainable mobility” of the future. This initially involved sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) as part of the NetZero strategy by 2030. It’s a long process for F1, which strongly believes in these investments in sustainable fuels for logistics.

Through a statement issued by Formula 1, the organization outlined the steps to achieve NetZero. This significant investment, as previously mentioned, involves purchasing SAF fuel to be used in planes for logistics. This fuel will be used by DHL, the global partner for transporting equipment around the world.

The forecasts suggest that SAF fuel will be used in 20% of the cargo planes employed throughout the season. Despite the relatively low percentage of use, the CO2 emissions saved are much more significant, with an index indicating an 80% reduction. This figure is representative of each flight in which SAF is used, translating into over 4,500 tons of CO2 equivalent.

To “store” a certain amount of SAF fuel, Formula 1 uses the “book and claim” model. This allows F1 to purchase the required amount of fuel, which is then introduced into the supply chain, ensuring high standards of traceability.

The adoption of SAF fuel for planes is just the latest piece of the puzzle aimed at NetZero 2030. In fact, for all European races, F1's vehicles are powered by biofuels, paving the way for race cars that will run exclusively on biofuels starting in 2026.

"Formula 1 has always been at the forefront of innovation, and our initial investment in Sustainable Aviation Fuel is a testament to our dedication to fulfilling our Net Zero commitment by 2030," said Ellen Jones, Head of ESG at Formula 1. "SAF is just the latest step towards innovation and highlights how alternative fuels, both on and off the track, can materially reduce carbon emissions. The realization of our sustainability strategy is only possible through coordinated actions across our sport."

Paul Fowler, Head of Motorsport Logistics at DHL, added: "Our long-standing partnership with Formula 1 is built on a shared passion for innovation and excellence. We are committed to using our expertise to transport Formula 1 cars and equipment around the world as efficiently as possible. With 40 years of experience in motorsport logistics, we are focused on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and making motorsports more sustainable with every step we take." – he concluded.
