Formula 1 continues to take the spotlight on Netflix with films and documentaries worth watching.
Drive to Survive has undoubtedly boosted the sport's popularity, growing its audience. The docuseries, also available on the same streaming platform, will return in February with its sixth season.
If you're looking for pure Hollywood-style entertainment or want to delve into the lives of some Formula 1 legends, here are some films and documentaries on Netflix that you shouldn't miss.
Rush
One of the most famous films set in the world of Formula 1. The historic rivalry between Niki Lauda and James Hunt is depicted in Ron Howard’s American blockbuster. *Rush* is adrenaline-filled, an action movie but also a human drama, where Daniel Brühl and Chris Hemsworth (himself an F1 enthusiast) engage in breathtaking duels on the track, showcasing a time in Formula 1 when the driver mattered more than technology.
The two are fierce rivals but respect each other to the end. Howard also portrays Lauda’s dramatic accident at Nürburgring and how it marked a pivotal moment in Formula 1 history.
Schumacher
Netflix provides a glimpse into Michael Schumacher's life with a documentary released on September 15, 2021 (coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the legendary German champion's Formula 1 debut). Those hoping to learn more about the Kaiser might be disappointed.
The documentary *Schumacher* reveals little new beyond some insights into the pilot's extraordinary career. It includes interviews with his family (notably his son Mick) and behind-the-scenes details of the tragic accident in the French Alps in December 2013, which forever changed Schumacher's life.
Senna
Ayrton Senna’s death was a watershed moment in Formula 1 history. That tragic May 1, 1994, remains indelibly etched in the minds of fans of the great Brazilian champion and beyond. Almost 30 years after his passing (Imola has already launched a traveling exhibition to honor him), what legacy did 'Magic' leave behind?
The documentary *Senna* seeks to explain just that: his legacy, which still lives today in all of us and in the Formula 1 drivers who grew up inspired by his feats, trying to emulate the “rain master.” A must-watch for F1 enthusiasts, the film, released in 2010, was awarded Best Documentary at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival.
Fangio – The Man Who Tamed Machines
An essential documentary for new generations wanting to explore the figure of Juan Manuel Fangio. In the 1950s, the Argentine driver was the King of Formula 1: five world titles, won in an era when safety wasn't a priority, and fatalities on the track were much more frequent. Fangio saw himself as one with the machine—perhaps this was the secret to his incredible success. In reality, he was deeply knowledgeable about engines, having been involved in the repair industry since childhood.
The Argentine driver raced in Formula 1 with Alfa Romeo, Maserati, Mercedes, and Ferrari, winning championships with all these teams. This characteristic demonstrated how, at the time, human talent outweighed machinery.
Senna (Miniseries)
The miniseries *Senna* recounts the origins of Ayrton’s legend: in six episodes, it retraces his career from karting to his establishment as a Formula 1 icon, becoming a legend of the sport. A remarkable life, tragically cut short at the 1994 Imola Grand Prix. Gabriel Leone portrays the Brazilian driver, a three-time world champion. The series also features iconic F1 personalities who knew Senna, including his eternal rival Alain Prost, as well as Niki Lauda, Gerhard Berger, and Nelson Piquet.
The miniseries was produced in collaboration with Ayrton's family, with particular involvement from the driver's sister, Viviane.
