Mattia Binotto at helm of Audi F1 project: Frederic Vasseur's opinion

Fred Vasseur’s View on Mattia Binotto’s Return

The recent news of Mattia Binotto’s return to Formula 1 has caused quite a stir in the paddock, with the former Ferrari team principal taking on the dual role of Chief Technical and Operating Officer at Sauber (which will later become Audi) starting from August 1st. He will effectively replace Andreas Seidl, who will leave the team after just a year and a half, along with Oliver Hoffmann.

Mattia Binotto’s arrival at Audi was one of the most interesting topics of discussion during the team principals’ press conference, which took place a few minutes ago at Spa-Francorchamps between the first and second free practice sessions for the Belgian Grand Prix.

When asked about the matter, Frederic Vasseur, who succeeded Mattia Binotto at the end of 2022, chose to remain discreet: “Do I want to comment? Absolutely not. I focus on my team, my guys, and I completely understand that building a Formula 1 team is challenging.” – the French manager pointed out.

“I think it’s difficult everywhere. Mattia did an excellent job at Ferrari in the past. He was successful and made the team a winner. I wish them all the best, but it’s not up to me to comment on Mattia’s potential at Audi.” – he continued.

Laurent Mekies, who was Mattia Binotto’s right-hand man at Ferrari for five years as Sporting Director, also commented on the news: “In terms of skills, there is no doubt that Mattia has everything it takes to make things work there, and probably elsewhere as well. I believe Audi will become an even stronger competitor in the near future.” – the French manager added.
