Toto Wolff attributes Lewis Hamilton's difficulties in the 2024 Formula 1 season to struggles with the tyres in the current ground effect era, although the Mercedes team principal remains confident that the Brit will recover and thrive, even potentially with Ferrari in the future.
While Hamilton has previously excelled against world champions like Fernando Alonso, Nico Rosberg, and Jenson Button, the 40-year-old driver found himself facing unprecedented challenges in his recent battles against George Russell. The 26-year-old outperformed his teammate in qualifying, winning their head-to-head 19-5, with Lewis Hamilton failing to consistently deliver a strong lap on Saturdays. This form saw him suffer an uncharacteristic four Q1 exits, including a disappointing performance at the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at Yas Marina.
This was a stark contrast to Lewis Hamilton's usual qualifying dominance, with the seven-time world champion holding a remarkable 104 pole positions. Fans and pundits were left perplexed by his sudden lack of pace, with some even suggesting sabotage by Mercedes or speculating that Hamilton might be past his prime.
However, Toto Wolff offers a different explanation, emphasizing that Lewis Hamilton's issues stem from the current car designs and the way they interact with the Pirelli tyres. According to Toto Wolff, Hamilton's driving style simply doesn't align with the characteristics of the tyres in use today, which has contributed to his struggles on track.
Toto Wolff explained to AMuS that Lewis has difficulty adapting to the current generation of cars. He pointed out that Lewis Hamilton tends to brake late and approach corners aggressively, but the car and tyres can sometimes be unforgiving, especially in qualifying. He also clarified that, despite speculation, Lewis Hamilton’s focus was still on his current team, stating that he hadn't yet considered a move to Ferrari, as he is too professional to think about such things during the season.
Toto Wolff anticipates that Hamilton will respond positively to his current challenges and draws comparisons to Fernando Alonso to explain his expectations. As Lewis Hamilton ages, it is inevitable that some aspects of his performance will begin to decline, as is the case with any athlete. His physical capabilities, including his ability to drive on the edge as he did in his mid-20s, will eventually diminish, and his reflexes may slow down over time.
However, the 53-year-old Austrian firmly believes that there is no indication of this happening just yet. He maintains that elite competitors like Hamilton, who has 105 Grand Prix victories, are more than capable of extending their careers in Formula 1, particularly with the right mindset and preparation. Wolff points to Fernando Alonso as an example of how longevity in the sport is achievable, showing that even with age, a driver can continue to perform at an exceptional level. Wolff added that he believes a top athlete like Lewis, who is fully dedicated to his craft, can delay the decline of his performance for a long time. He pointed out that this is evident in Fernando Alonso, who, despite his extensive experience, is still fast. The Mercedes team boss suggested that the same is true for the British driver.
