Formula 1 has published the onboard lap completed by Lewis Hamilton behind the wheel of Ayrton Senna's McLaren MP4/5B in the downpour at Interlagos. Can a nightmare Grand Prix still turn into an unforgettable weekend? Yes, if your name is Lewis Hamilton.
Lewis Hamilton fulfills his dream
The seven-time Formula 1 world champion, despite having one of the worst weekends of his career on the Interlagos circuit, will forever carry the memory of having sped behind the wheel of the MP4/5B, the legendary McLaren with which Ayrton Senna claimed his second world title in 1990.
In addition to the privilege of hitting the track with one of the most iconic cars in Formula 1 history, Hamilton had the chance to pay tribute to the memory of the champion from São Paulo in his home country of Brazil, in front of the crowd that more than thirty years ago celebrated the feats of their idol.
For a moment, however, Lewis Hamilton risked seeing his dream fade away. According to the original schedule, the Mercedes driver was supposed to take the honor lap after Saturday's qualifying session.
However, qualifying was postponed by race direction due to the extreme weather conditions, which caused several issues and forced organizers, teams, and drivers to set an early alarm on Sunday morning to fit within the event’s schedule.
In the end, though, that young boy who dreamed of one day emulating his hero’s achievements managed to fulfill one of his greatest wishes, and a disappointing Sunday didn't really matter.
