Gajser vince, mentre Lata sale sul podio al debutto in Honda HRC
Un fangoso circuito di Mantova nel nord Italia ha ospitato il primo round degli Internazionali d’Italia, dove l’intero team Honda HRC è sceso in pista per il suo primo evento shakedown del 2025. Nonostante le condizioni orribili, Tim Gajser ha mostrato la sua classe con una prestazione dominante uno contro uno e ha lanciato un avvertimento ai suoi rivali che ancora una volta sarà all’altezza della loro sfida per i massimi onori quest’anno.
Lo sloveno ha guidato ogni singolo giro della gara, ottenendo buone partenze e sorpassi rapidi per arrivare in testa e staccarsi dal gruppo. Come ha dimostrato l’anno scorso, quando le condizioni peggiorano, migliora, quindi è stato bello vedere che mantiene ancora quella eccellenza quando cade la pioggia. Per il compagno di squadra della Honda CRF450R Ruben Fernandez, le cose non sono andate così bene. Lo spagnolo ha avuto una collisione al primo giro che lo ha fatto scendere in fondo al gruppo, costringendolo a rialzarsi e a lottare per tornare indietro nel fango fangoso. È tornato al sesto posto e sperava in qualcosa di meglio nel secondo cancelletto, con le cose che sembravano andare bene all’inizio, dato che stava seguendo Gajser al secondo posto. Tuttavia, un piccolo ribaltamento lo ha lasciato incastrato sotto la moto e dopo essere stato finalmente aiutato a uscire da sotto, è rientrato ai box dove hanno deciso di uscire dalla pista.
Nella classe MX2, il nuovo acquisto della Honda HRC Valerio Lata ha dimostrato la sua velocità facendo due-tre al suo debutto per la squadra. Il giovane italiano ha ottenuto due partenze decenti e ha lottato duramente per tutta la durata di entrambe le gare, riducendo al minimo gli errori e facendo i sorpassi necessari per salire sul secondo gradino del podio. Dopo aver avuto solo pochi mesi per abituarsi a questa nuovissima moto, è stato un inizio impressionante per la sua carriera in Honda e gli ha dato una grande spinta di fiducia in vista del campionato mondiale MX2.
Per Ferruccio Zanchi le cose non sono andate proprio bene, ma è proprio per questo che il team ha scelto di fare queste gare di riscaldamento, in modo da poter sottoporre i piloti e le macchine a un duro test, che solo le corse possono offrire. Piccoli errori nella prima gara sono costati a Zanchi un possibile tentativo di podio, prima di dover uscire di pista nella seconda gara mentre era terzo. È stato un po’ deludente, ma il giovane sa che ci sono gare più grandi e importanti in arrivo ed è per questo che si è allenato duramente per tutto l’inverno.

È stata una bella giornata di gara, nonostante il meteo. È sempre importante fare un paio di gatedrop contro alcuni ragazzi veloci e riprendere il ritmo della gara. Le condizioni erano dure e le buche e tutto il resto non erano facili, ma ho trovato un buon flusso e mi sono semplicemente sistemato, con un ritmo sostenuto. Sono molto contento di aver vinto entrambe le gare, e ora alla prossima settimana a Montevarchi e spero di continuare allo stesso modo.
Ruben Fernandez 70
Non ho avuto la giornata migliore, in quelle che non erano condizioni molto belle. Una collisione al primo giro della prima gara mi ha costretto a raccogliere la mia moto, e questo ha significato che ho dovuto risalire dal fondo del gruppo per finire sesto. Poi nella seconda gara, sono partito bene e stavo seguendo Tim all’inizio, ma un piccolo errore in una curva scivolosa e sono caduto e la moto mi è atterrata addosso. Quando ho ricevuto aiuto, per uscire da sotto, ero ultimo, e anche se ho provato a continuare, alla fine è stata una decisione migliore quella di ritirarmi dalla pista. Tuttavia, è stato bello fare una gara e tornare in quello stato mentale dopo un allenamento così lungo, e rivedere tutti. Spero che risultati migliori siano dietro l’angolo.
Valerio Lata 18
Ho avuto una giornata davvero buona a Mantova, guidando nel fango e sotto la pioggia e con la Honda HRC per la prima volta. Due-tre risultati mi hanno portato sul podio per il secondo posto assoluto, ed è stato bello avere la battaglia alla fine della seconda gara per guadagnarmi una posizione. Abbiamo lavorato duramente come squadra per essere qui e sono molto contento di come abbiamo iniziato. Spero che continui così!
Ferruccio Zanchi 73
La pista non era delle migliori a causa di tutta quella pioggia, ma speravo comunque di poter fare bene. Sfortunatamente non è andata come volevo, ma è stato comunque bello essere qui e tornare a correre di nuovo. Ho fatto un paio di errori in gara e quando è così fangoso, le cose diventano davvero difficili, ma impareremo da questo e continueremo a lavorare sodo per fare meglio in futuro.

Nel complesso è stata una giornata di successo, ma anche una giornata di apprendimento. Tim e Valerio hanno ottenuto degli ottimi risultati e questo è sempre utile in queste gare di pre-stagione. Tuttavia, abbiamo avuto anche qualche difficoltà, e questo è anche utile perché dà ai nuovi membri del team una sfida da superare, cosa che hanno fatto. Troviamo sempre che venire a questi Internazionali d'Italia sia un'esperienza preziosa e ci aiuterà sicuramente per quando inizieranno i campionati mondiali.

Gajser wins, as Lata podiums on Honda HRC debut
A muddy Mantova circuit in northern Italy hosted the first round of the Internazionali d'Italia, where the entire Honda HRC team took to the track for their first shakedown event of 2025. Despite the horrible conditions, Tim Gajser showed his class by taking a dominating one-one performance and sending out a warning to his rivals that once again he'll be up their challenging for the top honours this year.
The Slovenian led every single lap of the race, getting good starts and making quick passes to get to the front and pull away from the field. As he showed last year, when the conditions get worse, he gets better, so it was good to see he still maintains that excellency when the rain falls. For Honda CRF450R teammate Ruben Fernandez, things didn't quite go so well though. The Spaniard had a collision on the first lap which dropped him down the field, forcing him to pick himself up and fight back through the pack in sloppy mud. He came back to sixth place though and was hoping for better in the second gate-drop, with things looking good early-on as he was following Gajser around in second place. However, a small tip-over left him stuck under his bike and after eventually being assisted out from underneath it, he pulled into the pits where they decided to pull off the race track.
In the MX2 class, new Honda HRC signing Valerio Lata proved his speed by going two-three in his debut for the team. The young Italian got two decent starts and fought hard for the duration of both races, minimising mistakes and making the necessary passes in order to get himself onto the second step of the podium. After only having a few months to get used to this brand-new machine, it was an impressive start to his Honda career and gives him a big boost of confidence heading into the MX2 world championship.
For Ferruccio Zanchi, things didn't quite go as well, but that is the precise reason that the team choose to do these warm-up races, so that they can put the riders and the machines through a vigorous test, that only racing can provide. Small mistakes in the first race cost Zanchi a possible shot of the podium, before he had to pull off the race track in race two whilst running third. It was slightly disappointing, but the youngster knows bigger and more important races are to come and that's what he's been training hard for this whole winter.
Tim Gajser 243
It was a good day of racing, despite the weather. Always important to get in a couple of gatedrops against some fast guys and just get back into the rhythm of racing. Conditions were tough, and the ruts and everything weren't easy but I found a good flow and just settled in, with a strong pace. Very happy to win both races, and now onto next week in Montevarchi and hopefully continue in the same way.
Ruben Fernandez 70
I didn't have the best day, in what weren't very nice conditions. A collision on the first lap of race one left me picking my bike up, and that meant I had to come from way down to field to finish sixth. Then in race two, I had a good start and was following Tim early on, but a slight mistake on a slippery corner and I fell over and the bike landed on top of me. By the time I got help, to get out from underneath it, I was last, and although I tried to ride on, in the end it was a better decision to pull off the race track. Still, it was good to have a race and just get back into that state of mind again after training for so long, and to see everyone again. Hopefully better results will be around the corner though.
Valerio Lata 18
I had a really good day in Mantova, riding in the mud and the rain and with Honda HRC for the first time. Two-three results got me onto the podium for second place overall, and it was nice to have the battle at the end of the second race to gain me a position. We have worked hard as a team to be here and I'm very happy with how we started. Hopefully it will continue!
Ferruccio Zanchi 73
The track wasn't the best due to all the rain, but I still hoped I could do well. Unfortunately it didn't go as well as I wanted, but it was still good to be here and just get back racing again. I made a couple of mistakes in the races and when it is this muddy, that makes things really difficult, but we will learn from this and keep working hard to do better in the future.

Overall it was a successful day, but also a learning day. Tim and Valerio had some great results and that's always useful in these pre-season races. However, we also had some difficulties, and that is also useful because it gives the new members of the team a challenge to overcome – which they did. We always find coming to these Internazionali d'Italia valuable experience and it'll definitely help us for when the world championships start.
