NASCAR comments after Kyle Busch voices frustration with being parked in the Daytona 500

On Sunday, the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series season began. Daytona International Speedway hosted the Daytona 500.

With just 14 laps to go, Joey Logano and Ricky Stenhouse Jr were in a battle for space off turn two. The end result, was them both spinning across the track.

Kyle Busch was one of 10+ car collected.

In the off-season, NASCAR updated their DVP. Previously, teams were given 6 minutes to make repairs to the car on pit road. Additionally, you could only make repairs in the garage if it was due to a mechanical failure. Teams were unable to repair crash damage in the garage.

For 2025, teams are now limited to 7 minutes of repairs on the pit lane. They can also go to the garage for repairs. However, they can only due that once.

NASCAR updates rules for DVP, waivers and more in 2025 season

After repairs are made, they just three laps to meet minimum speed. Once they do, they’re in the race. If they fail to meet minimum speed, they are out of the race.

After making repairs, Kyle Busch was parked.

“Parked by NASCAR officials. Rule says you have 3 attempts to make minimum speed. The race never went back green yet. I don't even think they know their own rules or procedures,” Kyle Busch stated after the race in frustration.

However, the No. 8 team went to the garage twice. NASCAR explained in detail…

NASCAR comments

“I think it was a misunderstand on Kyle’s point there, from his perspective,” Elton Sawyer stated via SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.

“Just to try to keep it as simple as I can, what we do on pit road, as far as the damaged vehicle policy, hasn’t changed from 2024. Other than we’re giving it, additional minutes.”

NASCAR increased the time allowed for repairs from 6 minutes to 7.

“The one thing we added this year, is at the scene of the incident, if you can’t drive away we would hook to the vehicle and we would tow it to the garage. Once you go to the garage, you’re going to get one opportunity to leave the garage.”

“This is not a new rule either. One opportunity at three consecutive green laps to meet minimum speed. Once you do that, you reset and you’re back in the game.”

NASCAR isn’t shy to point out when they’ve made a mistake. And they transparently do so. This was not one of those cases…

“In Kyle’s case, we went out, left the garage. Came back in. And once you do that, you’re going to be eliminated from the event.”

“If we didn’t have a way to end the DVP part of it. Then the competitors would go to the garage, work on the car a little bit, go back out. Run one lap, come back in. They would do that, multiple times. That’s circumventing the purpose of the rule.”

“It was clearly just a misunderstanding. We had multiple meetings in the off-season with the teams and the drivers. Multiple drivers came by throughout the week with questions about the policy.”

“It was unfortunate for Kyle and the RCR team because they had a really good car. I’m sure they were looking for a good finish and that wasn’t the case.”
