NASCAR is set to run two tire compounds for the race at Phoenix Raceway

On Wednesday, NASCAR announced that the option tire will return for the race at Phoenix Raceway.

The option tire is a softer tire designed to increase grip. However, in most cases, that also increases wear.

NASCAR ran the same strategy for the Summer race at Richmond Raceway. In that case, each team was given six sets of primary tires and another 2 sets of options.

For Phoenix, teams will also have six sets of the primary tire and two option sets.

This will be a test of the option tire. If the tire works as designed, it will become the primary tire for the championship race.

For practice, teams will one set of the option tire and another of the primary.

The NASCAR Cup Series will race at Phoenix Raceway on March 9.
