2024 MG ZS stock running out ahead of new petrol model next year

Stock of the outgoing MG ZS is running low ahead of all-new, non-hybrid versions due in Australia early next year – likely with higher prices.
New dealer stock of the 2024 MG ZS small SUV is running down in Australia before the arrival of non-hybrid versions of the next-generation model by the end of March 2025.
MG Australia has confirmed only near-new demonstrator examples of the entry-level ZS Excite and ZST Core remain in stock at dealerships, while limited stock of higher-grade ZST variants remains available to purchase.
Dealer demonstrator examples of the ZS Excite are listed "while stocks last" on the MG website for $22,990 drive-away until 31 December 2024 – compared to $20,990 drive-away for brand-new examples sold between 1 November 2024 and 30 November 2024.
The ZST Core is available as a MY24 dealer demonstrator for $24,990, while a brand-new MY24 example of the ZST Vibe – both variants sharing a 1.5-litre non-turbo petrol engine and CVT automatic – costs $25,990.
The ZS Excite dates back to when the vehicle was initially launched in 2017 – missing potentially life-saving autonomous emergency braking (AEB) technology – while the ZST is an updated model launched in 2020 with more advanced safety features, updated engines and extra technology.
Fitted with a more powerful 1.3-litre turbo three-cylinder engine and six-speed auto gearbox, the ZST Excite and Essence currently cost $27,990 and $29,990 for MY24 stock, respectively.
The MG ZS is Australia's best-selling small SUV – and one of the nation's most popular cars outright – with 21,462 examples reported as sold from January to November 2024, ahead of the Hyundai Kona (16,431), GWM Haval Jolion (12,547), Mazda CX-30 (11,770), and Mitsubishi ASX (11,325).
It is Australia's fourth best-selling SUV behind the mid-size Toyota RAV4 (53,599), Mitsubishi Outlander (25,622) and large Ford Everest (24,018).
Hybrid versions of the new-generation MG ZS arrived in Australia last month from $33,990 drive-away, but more affordable non-hybrid models are due to follow between January and March next year.

Government approval documents reveal standard petrol versions will include an updated version of the current 1.5-litre non-turbo four-cylinder, along with a turbocharged 1.5-litre to replace the three-cylinder in the outgoing ZST Excite and Essence.
According to the documents, both powertrains will be paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) automatic.
The CVT will replace the four-speed torque-converter auto in the current non-turbo ZS Excite, and the six-speed torque-converter auto in turbocharged ZST models. A CVT is already fitted to the ZST Core and Vibe.
Prices are expected to climb over current non-hybrid ZS variants, particularly above the current entry-level grade as it is not fitted with soon-to-be-mandatory AEB technology.

With the new-gen ZS Hybrid+ as a guide, the non-hybrid ZS could be offered in the same Excite and Essence trims – or MG Australia could elect to introduce a Core or Vibe petrol variant with less equipment.
Standard features for the ZS Hybrid+ Excite include 17-inch alloy wheels, LEDs for most exterior lights, a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, built-in satellite navigation, a 7.0-inch instrument cluster display, and a suite of active safety features.
The Essence costs $3000 more in hybrid form, upgrading to larger 18-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic sunroof, a leather-trimmed steering wheel, synthetic leather-look (PVC) upholstery, heated front seats, and a power-adjustable driver's seat.
ANCAP has confirmed a four-star safety rating for the new ZS under the latest, most stringent 2024 criteria, with the score currently applied to hybrid versions only.
