Hope for Toyota GR Corolla sedan and wagon variants fade

Despite reports of both a GR Corolla sedan and wagon being in development, no prototypes have been seen since the hot hatch was unveiled.

Almost 18 months after Toyota GR Corolla hatchback launched in Australia, no further evidence has appeared suggesting the model will be released in other body styles.

In the lead-up to the unveiling of the GR Corolla, multiple unconfirmed reports out of Japan – some from reputable publications, such as Best Car, which is known to get insider information from Toyota – claimed both sedan and wagon versions were in development.

While the accuracy of those reports is unknown, it now looks as if the possibility of GR Corolla sedan and/or wagon being in development has ended before reaching production, with no prototypes spotted in the wild.

Toyota doesn’t sell the Corolla wagon – known as the Touring – in Australia, but we do get one of two Corolla sedans made.

As previously reported, a smaller sedan is made exclusively for the Japanese market, while a larger global model is built for Australia, North America, and other parts of the world.

But while there doesn’t appear to be a sedan or wagon variant of the GR Corolla at this stage, the hot hatch is set to gain an automatic transmission in the near future.

After Toyota Australia executives revealed more than 50 per cent of GR86 and GR Supra buyers opted for an auto, a leaked dealer bulletin from Canada confirmed an eight-speed automatic transmission was entering production – likely the same unit now available in the GR Yaris.
