An iconic Mercedes-Benz, driven by Formula One legends, is up for auction and poised to break records.
UPDATE, 3 February 2025: The title-winning Mercedes-Benz has smashed the F1 auction record, collecting a staggering EUR$51,155 million dollars, or just over AU$85 million.
The iconic car not only met its estimate but also more than doubled the previous record for the highest-selling Formula One car, set in 2013.

A rare 1954 Mercedes-Benz W 196 R Streamliner is headed for auction, expected to surpass AU$85 million.
The estimated price would set a new record, making it the most expensive Formula One car to be sold at auction. The current record is held by the same model with a different chassis number, which sold for just over AU$32 million in 2013.
This iconic car, offered for sale by the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum, will be the first Streamliner-bodied W 196 R ever made available for private ownership.
The Streamliner debuted at the 1954 French Grand Prix and went on to achieve remarkable success over the years.
Juan Manuel Fangio clinched his second World Drivers’ Championship with this car, which was also driven by the renowned Sir Stirling Moss at the 1955 Italian Grand Prix at Monza, where he recorded the fastest lap.
When it was retired in 1955, only 10 W 196 R models existed.
RM Sotheby's is managing the sale, set to take place in February, 2025, in Stuttgart.
