Stefano Domenicali defends Monza: "There is no Formula 1 without it"

The CEO of Formula 1, Stefano Domenicali, has no doubts about the inclusion of the Monza Grand Prix in the calendar. However, he considers it unlikely that both Italian circuits will remain on the schedule beyond 2025. The renovations made to the Lombardy track might therefore be sufficient to secure a contract renewal.
Both Imola and Monza have agreements expiring at the end of the next season. With Madrid entering the scene and more countries vying for a spot in the championship, renewal conditions are stringent. As a result, Italy, which already hosts two races, might lose one of its Grands Prix.
Italy is essential to the Formula 1 series
Currently, both Grands Prix are vying for a contract extension that would keep them on the calendar beyond 2026. With the total number of races seemingly capped at 24, if Madrid joins, someone will have to give up their spot. Stefano Domenicali defended Monza during an interview with the Italian daily newspaper *La Repubblica*.
"We need to understand whether the country's system can support both initiatives or if one or both promoters can increase private investments. This is a phase we want to clarify over the course of the year. What is clear is that we cannot imagine Formula 1 without the Italian Grand Prix."
The Italian executive also praised the improvements made to the Monza circuit for this year's Grand Prix. "After too many years focused on the past, Monza has begun a renewal process that was fundamental for us. We must continue in this direction—improving the stands, paddock, and hospitality. Formula 1 cannot ignore Monza, but this does not mean its position is permanent. It means having responsibilities and commitments."
