A man in the United States has been charged after allegedly smashing through the front of a Mazda dealership when a refund request for his used vehicle was reportedly denied.

A now-viral video shows the used Subaru Outback customer intentionally plough into the front of the Tim Dahle Mazda dealership in Murray, Utah – a suburb of Salt Lake City – with employees inside taking cover.

Local news outlet Fox 13 Utah reports the 35-year-old man purchased a used third-generation Subaru Outback from the dealership on the morning of Monday 9 December 2024, then believed to have discovered mechanical issues when he returned home.

The man reportedly returned to the dealership in the afternoon in an attempt to return the vehicle, labeling it a "lemon", however the management of the Mazda dealership initially declined as the car was sold in an "as is" condition.

He then allegedly threatened to drive through the dealership's front door if he didn't receive a refund, and while a dealership employee claimed a refund or a different car were eventually offered to the customer, he followed through with his threat to drive into the building.

The man can then be seen exiting the vehicle and shouting at the dealership employees, with one yelling to call the police.

Tyler Slade, a manager at the dealership, told Fox 13 Utah the man had been warned the vehicle required mechanical work before the purchase.

"We were very clear about the fact that this car is not retail,” said Slade. “It's gonna need more inspecting and some work."

"In this situation, the customer needed the car, it fit his limited budget. And in our mind we're doing him a favour."

Police reportedly arrested the man, who was then booked into a Salt Lake City jail and later released to face charges of felony criminal mischief and reckless endangerment.

In an interview, the man – who purchased the vehicle for $US4000 ($AU6250) – told Inside Edition he "shouldn't have done it" but "hit a breaking point".

While seven dealership employees were near the front door when the customer smashed through it, nobody was injured, but the event caused approximately $US10,000 ($AU15,500) worth of damage to the dealership.
